Anecdotes from Happy's Way (2006)
On the following Tuesday afternoon I returned to the jail, and approached the guard
about seeing the young man. To my surprise he refused my request, saying; “No! You will
have to see him through his lawyer.” I walked away somewhat dejected. I was half-way down
the stairs, but stopped, and said to myself; “God sent me here, today!” Prayerfully, I approached
a different guard, and asked him the same question. Evidently I was truly blessed when he said;
“Sure, come on in!” In a small private room I seated myself across the table from the young
man who looked me straight in the eyes, and said; “God couldn’t forgive me, I murdered my
wife!” I felt compelled to reach over, and hold his hand, and asked if I could share three verses
of scripture which were instrumental in my own coming to Christ … “Afterwards, he came
across the room and hugged me!”
I was walking down the street one afternoon when ‘Sandy’ an addict, ran up to me with tears
in her eyes. She had read my mini-book in a restaurant several months earlier. She told me,
“I got down on my knees two days ago and asked Jesus into my heart. Now I’m a born- again
Christian!” That teen hugged, and kissed me, in Christ’s love.
Early one morning my phone rang at 3:30 am, and a voice and the other end said; I’ve been
drinking, and heard you talk at a twelve-step meeting last night. I found his house at 4:00 am,
and as soon as I walked in he said; I’m a Jew, and want to know more about Christ! …
At 4:30 am, he put his trust in Christ, and he’s now a completed Jew. Cathy was a street person. As I walked into the Out Of The Cold program that feeds the
homeless, and gives them a couple hours to talk and share their sorrows, Cathy sat across
from me, and said; “I really blew it last night, I got drunk!” I could see she was really messed up,
so I reached over, and held her hand, and told her God’s plan of salvation for her life.
Moments later she stopped the first person that passed her and said; “I just asked Jesus into
my life, and now I’m a born-again Christian!” As she walked out the door … she stopped, and
ran back to me, and gave me another hug — with tears in her eyes she said; “I just came in
here to have my last meal. I was planning to jump off the Bloor Viaduct Bridge as soon as I left!’’ |
